What Do the Data Tell Us?

In Bernalillo County, 47.9% of the population is Hispanic or Latino, and 31.1% of the Hispanic population is under 18 years old (U.S. Census 2010). Given the large and growing proportion of the population that Hispanics represent, as well as their relatively young demographic composition, the issue of educational attainment is a challenge not just for our Hispanic population, but for our community as a whole.

In Bernalillo County, only 22% of Hispanics or Latinos over the age of 25 have an Associate’s, Bachelor’s, or Graduate degree, compared to 52% of White, Non-Hispanics, 29% of American Indians, and 36% of African Americans (U.S. Census, American Community Survey 2010, 3-Year Estimates).

The UNM Center for Policy Research has created conducted vital research in Bernalillo County that is guiding this project. Please see two important research documents.
